The quality of Shea Butter is defined by its unsaponifiable fraction, that is, the most active part of plant lipids. The unsaponifiable fraction is that part of the fat (oil or butter) that does not saponify, that is, that does not become soap when reacted with certain substances (called bases). The unsaponifiable fraction is considered to be a real gold mine of oils and butters: it is basically the most active and important part, and for this reason the more an oil or butter has a good amount of unsaponifiable fraction, the more pronounced properties the compound has on the skin. Its qualities are as follows:

♦ UV-protective action: this fraction has been shown to have the ability to function as a screen against the sun's rays, which is why oils and butters are often included in sunscreens.

♦ Stimulates collagen and elastin production: the unsaponifiable fraction is used in cosmetic creams aimed at those with dry skin and, above all, those who want to fight the signs of aging. Wrinkles and lack of skin tone, in fact, can be attributed to a lack of collagen, which in this way can be stimulated to reproduce itself.

♦ Repairs skin damage: for dermatitis, chapped hands and lips, oils and butters have always been considered a panacea. The reason lies precisely in the beneficial action of the unsaponifiable fraction, which repairs damage caused on the skin by cold or the attack of harsh chemicals.
