Melatonin Drops is a dietary supplement of melatonin, which helps regularize the sleep-wake cycle and reduce the time required to get to sleep. Melatonin is a hormone secreted mainly, but not only, by a small gland in the brain called the pineal gland or epiphysis. Its production is minimal in early life, increases in youth, and then declines again in late adulthood and old age. Melatonin is a very important substance because it acts on the hypothalamus and goes to regulate the body's circadian rhythm. Its secretion is regulated by light: when the light stimulus reaches the retina, a signal is transmitted to the epiphysis and its secretion is inhibited, to a dose-dependent extent. Darkness, in contrast, stimulates its release; shortly after the onset of darkness, melatonin concentrations in the blood rise rapidly and reach a maximum between 2 and 4 a.m. and then gradually decline as morning approaches. For this reason, melatonin peaks during the night hours and much lower values during the day. Melatonin has been shown to be effective in some sleep disorders; in fact, most of them depend on a phase shift in the secretion cycle of this hormone, and a melatonin supplement can help restore the body's natural biological rhythms. In general, the beneficial effect is achieved by taking melatonin starting at a dosage of 1 mg, just before bedtime. The effectiveness of melatonin is also evident in the treatment of jet lag, the so-called time zone syndrome that affects those who frequently travel from one part of the world to another; this syndrome is characterized by sleep disturbances, lack of appetite, digestive difficulties, nervousness and irritability. Melatonin supplementation intervenes in these cases to regularize the internal clock, which is discombobulated by the time zone.
