SALICE (Salix Alba) is a large tree belonging to the Salicaceae family that grows wild in temperate areas of Asia and Europe. It contains phenolic glycosides (salicin, populin, salicylic alcohol), aldehydes, aromatic acids, flavonoids, and tannins. Salicin, an active ingredient very similar to Aspirin, constitutes the most interesting active ingredient of the plant for its analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-rheumatic properties and has a considerably less irritating action on the gastric mucosa than acetylsalicylic acid; also, the 'vaso-protective action of flavonoids enhances its anti-inflammatory action. Willow is used successfully against fever, sore throats and colds, as Willow extracts are very rich in vitamin C. It also proves useful for headaches, muscle aches and back pain. Willow extract is indicated in the treatment of inflammatory and painful conditions, including rheumatic conditions, affecting muscles and joints (arthritis, fibromyalgia, muscle tears). It also turns out to be a useful plant for 'insomnia, reduces blood glucose levels and menstrual cramps.
